Joren C. Madsen, M.D., D.Phil. received his bachelor’s degree from Brown University and his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1982. After completing his first three years of surgical training at Massachusetts General Hospital, he was awarded the Claude E. Welch Surgical Research fellowship from MGH and an Overseas Research Scholarship from Oxford University to study transplantation immunology. His work there culminated in a doctorate degree from Balliol College, Oxford University in immunology. Dr. Madsen completed his MGH surgical residency in 1990 and went on to train in cardiothoracic surgery at the MGH and Boston Children’s Hospital. He joined the professional staff of the MGH Division of Cardiac Surgery in 1993. He was the Surgical Director of Cardiac Transplantation at MGH between 1999 and 2006 and Section Chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery between 2008 and 2011.
Currently, Dr. Madsen is Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and the W. Gerald and Patricia R. Austen Distinguished Scholar in Cardiac Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is the founding director of the MGH Transplant Center, which encompasses kidney, liver, lung, heart, pancreas and small bowel transplantation in adults and children and is co-director of the Transplantation Biology Research Center, which is a large multi-disciplinary group of scientists working to translate discoveries in basic immunology into clinical protocols the will benefit all transplant patients.
Dr. Madsen has a strong commitment to both clinical and scientific education, having mentored over 90 postdoctoral and cardiothoracic fellows. He has served on the board of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation and the American Transplantation Society. Dr. Madsen has authored more than 150 publications and served on the editorial boards of Transplantation, the American Journal of Transplantation, and the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. In 2002, received the Fujisawa Basic Science Award and in 2009, Dr. Madsen became the first surgeon ever to be elected president of the American Society of Transplantation.
