Heidi M. Schaefer MD

Heidi Schaefer is a transplant nephrologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Schaefer received her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati. She completed her medical residency and nephrology fellowship with a focus on kidney transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh. She currently serves as the Medical Director of the Living Donor Program and the fellowship director of the kidney transplant training program at Vanderbilt. She has clinical interests in caring for patients with dual organ transplants, other organ transplants with chronic kidney disease, and kidney transplant recipients with HIV.  Her research interests include performance improvement initiatives in living donation. She has been a long-standing member of the AST and has served on multiple committees. She is a member of the ASN Transplant Advisory Group (TAG) and the TAG representative to the ASN Quality and Patient Safety Task Force.
