Alastair Smith qualified in medicine from Aberdeen University in 1988, and trained in general medicine, gastroenterology and liver disease in both the UK and the US. Before taking up his current position, he was consultant physician with interest in gastroenterology and liver disease in Eastbourne, UK. He serves as medical director of liver transplantation at Duke University Hospital and Medical Center.
