Dr. Lisa VanWagner MD, MSc

Dr. Lisa VanWagner is a senior fellow in Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. Dr. VanWagner received her medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 2007. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, IL in 2010 and then served as Chief Medical Resident from 2010-2011. She also obtained her master’s degree in Clinical Investigation from the Northwestern University Graduate School in 2011. Dr. VanWagner will complete her clinical fellowship in June 2014 and will be staying on at Northwestern as the Advanced Transplant Hepatology Fellow beginning July 1, 2014.

In addition to her clinical duties, Dr. VanWagner has been very active in liver transplantation outcomes research with a specific research interest in risk assessment, focusing on the complex interplay between cardiovascular and liver disease. Dr. VanWagner is a recipient of a National Research Service Award (NRSA) individual fellowship (parent F32) from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute with supplemental additional funding awarded from the American Liver Foundation to support the multidisciplinary project entitled “Derivation and Validation of a Cardiac Risk Index for use in Liver Transplantation.” She is also a recent recipient of the American Heart Association’s Scott Grundy Award for excellence in metabolism research and the American College of Gastroenterology’s Distinguished Achievement Fellow Research Award. Her leadership abilities and dedication to both local and regional committee service are exemplified by her participation as an active member of the American Liver Foundation’s Illinois Chapter Medical Advisory Committee, as well as multiple institutional committees, including the Department of Medicine’s Consultation Quality Improvement Committee and Residency Selection Committee. Her clinical and research interests are dedicated to improving the understanding and management of cardiovascular comorbid conditions in the liver transplant recipient.
